The government announced a second spell of Covid-19 in Pakistan on October 28, 2020, when a daily increase in cases reached 750 compared to 400 to 500 a few weeks ago. This has been attributed to the lack of precautionary measures adopted by the masses.

Data compiled by the world health organization (WHO) shows that poor ventilation can lead to an increase in virus transmission. Healthy air in homes is a bigger concern than ever. Evidence that Covid-19 spreads through the air means that those spending time indoors – even at home – might be at risk of exposure. Using filters, fans, air purifiers and open windows can help.

Here, we weigh in on ways to improve your home’s ventilation to combat viruses as well as outdoor and indoor pollutants.

  • Natural Ventilation

Ventilation is the introduction of fresh air into an indoor space while the stale air is pushed outside. Whether at home or in public buildings, such as schools and offices, simply opening windows and doors whenever possible can improve ventilation. Data shows that opening windows in a typical home can double ventilation rates. What’s more, scientists found that opening windows in old-fashioned style hospitals with large windows and high ceilings increased air changes almost 20 times. However, opening windows makes it difficult to control the indoor temperature. In places where there are high levels of outdoor air pollution, it can also let this into the building. In accordance with the World Health Organization’s guidelines, the air quality in Pakistan is considered unsafe – the most recent data indicates the country’s annual mean concentration of PM2. 5 is 58 µg/m3, exceeding the recommended maximum of 10 µg/m3. Hence, we won’t recommend natural ventilation.

  • HVAC systems & Central Air Systems

The acronym HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and it is the broadly used term to describe equipment used to keep homes at a comfortable temperature. If opening a window is not an option, then turning on the central air system or ‘HVAC’ could help improve indoor ventilation.  HVAC systems typically take outdoor air, and pump air into all the rooms inside the building. If you have an HVAC system:

  • Run the system fan for longer times, or continuously, as HVAC systems filter the air only when the fan is running. Many systems can be set to run the fan even when no heating or cooling is taking place.
  • Check to be sure the filter is correctly in place and consider upgrading the filter to a higher efficiency filter or the highest-rated filter that your system fan and filter slot can accommodate.

According to the WHO, a well-maintained and operated HVAC system can reduce the spread of COVID-19 in indoor spaces by increasing the rate of air change, reducing recirculation of air and increasing the use of outdoor air. They can typically provide up to 5 air changes per hour, greatly improving indoor ventilation.

  • HEPA Filter Air Purifier

If you do not have a central air system installed, then do not think twice before installing an air purifier.  Air purifier working is fairly simple. These machines remove particles from the air, usually using a filter made of tightly woven fibers. They can capture particles containing bacteria and viruses and can help reduce disease transmission.

However, you should keep in mind a few crucial steps when choosing the right air purifier. Your best option is a cleaner that uses a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, as these remove more than 99.97% of all particle sizes. Coolpoint has come up with an innovative idea of “Air Purifier” which gives you the highest CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate).

The best thing is air purifiers don’t need to cost an arm and a leg. Coolpoint offers you the best Air Purifier in Pakistan which has the most advanced filtration system in the market. It has a 3 levels filtration system which has the best surface area of filtration that cleans up to 1200 – 1500 square feet room.
